Afro-American Almanac : provides good information -- including historical
documents -- related to African-American history in the United States.
C. I. A. World Factbook : Do you need information about a foreign country? Well, this is
the place to start! Good demographic info provide by the Central Intelligence
Agency (the C. I. A.). Nobody does it better! Recommended.
Living Almanac of Disasters : click on a date to find which major disaster took place
on that date. Neat idea.
Old Farmer's Almanac : good, time-tested advice on farming, gardening, planting,
recipes, and other folksy things.

Biographies
"Biographies" at Infoplease.com : a nice collection of short biographical summaries of
major figures in politics, entertainment, sports, science, and the arts.
Biography.com : a commercial site that has a good biographical search feature. By
using the search feature, you can find basic information about historically
important individuals.
Biography-Center.com : an easy-to-use biographical search site. You can even perform
a search in several different languages!
Dead People Server : a spooky site devoted to informing all of us about which famous
persons are alive and which are dead. Be sure to scroll down the page to find the
names of famous dead people. NOTE: For more weirdness in a similar vein,
also see the "Who's Alive and Who's Dead" and "Find a Grave" entries in
this section.
Distinguished Women of the Past and Present : a constantly growing site devoted to
biographies of many important women throughout history.
Find a Grave : a strangely cool site that has information about famous dead people.
Here, you'll usually find good biographical info about the person, a picture of the
person, and even a picture of the person's grave! It's all excellent (if slightly creepy)
stuff to spice up your biography homework!
Lives: The Biography Resource : a good site that offers an impressive collection of
biography links. This site also has some "special collections" that consist of
biographies that fit into certain social and historical categories.
Who's Alive and Who's Dead : a weird, but strangely engaging site devoted to keeping
tabs on whether certain major personalities and celebrities are alive or dead.

find business-related Internet resources. Business topics here are well-categorized
and clearly described. Recommended.
"Business and Finance" at Infoplease.com : a good source for information on US.
businesses and economic trends.
"Business News" from Yahoo : Visually, it may not look like much, but this web page is
chocked full of the latest business news from many business sectors.
CNNMoney : provides the latest business news not only from the United States, but
from the rest of the world as well. And excellent site for finding the latest business
headline news. Recommended.
CorporateInformation.com : an awesome site where you can quickly search for
detailed information on hundreds of thousands of companies throughout the world.
You are required to register to use this site. Thankfully, basic registration is free,
       allowing you to view up to three corporate information pages per day.
Recommended.
Dismal Scientist : a great site that provides current economic info on the U. S. and
several other countries. The U. S. database even gives economic profiles
(population, unemployment rate and so on) for every major city and town in the
country! Recommended.
Financial Times.com : a very good site that offers the latest U. S. and international
business news.

Census / Demographics
50States.com : a cool site that contains all kinds of information about the 50 states that

International Statistics : provided by the U. S. Department of Labor, this page contains
links to numerous statistical sites for foreign countries. Not all the linked sites are
in English. However, many sites offer English language versions of themselves.
State and County Demographic and Economic Profiles : concise information on
every state and county in the United States. A terrific resource for lots of cool, easy
-to-understand statistics about America's states and counties!
Stately Knowledge : a great site from the Internet Public Library where you can get all
kinds of information about each of the states in the U. S. Recommended.
U. S. Statistics in Brief : great info from the U. S. Census Bureau about employment,
population, education and much, much more.
World Statistics : very good, easy-to-understand information on global population,
conflicts, economics and more. Another good one from the folks at Infoplease.com.

"Issues and Causes" from Yahoo : an awesome list of links to many of today's most
controversial issues. A great starting place for your research! Recommended.
Law Headlines at FindLaw.com : daily legal headlines involving the biggest issues in
the news.
Newsday.com : get today's very latest news. If you want up-to-the-moment news, this is
the place to visit!
Stats.org : a fantastic site that points out how surveys, polls, and other information in
many new reports, political statements, and other media-related stories is often just
plain WRONG! If you're doing a homework assignment regarding social studies,
politics or the news media, then this site will provide you with a wealth of terrific,
though-provoking information. Highly recommended.
U. S. Local News : get local news from almost any area of the United States. This site
will let you go quickly to any of hundreds of local newspaper web sites in the U. S.
Yahooligan's News for Kids : a nicely done site that provides current events news for
younger students.

American Heritage On-line Dictionary (English) : Bartelby.com's excellent on-line
dictionary! Recommended.
Dictionary.com : a great site that provides not only an on-line dictionary, but a
thesaurus, writing resource links and other useful word-related stuff!
Foreign Language Dictionaries at Xlation.com : an awesome collection of links to a
ton of foreign language dictionaries.
Merriam-Webster On-line : an excellent on-line dictionary. Merriam-Webster also has
a very good on-line thesaurus at this site. Recommended.
MSN Dictionary : a very good on-line dictionary available from the Microsoft Network.
OneLook On-line Dictionary : a simple-looking, but incredibly powerful on-line
dictionary service that searches dozens of dictionaries simultaneously for the word
you want defined. Highly recommended.
WordSmyth.net : a nice, clean-looking on-line dictionary. The easy-to-use interface
makes this site ideal for younger students. You'll need to register to use this site.
But don't worry: Registration is free.
YourDictionary.com : another great dictionary site! Here, you can look up definitions in
several foreign languages and even translate words back and forth
between languages!

Encyclopedias
Canadian Encyclopedia Online : a very nice on-line encyclopedia that provides good,
brief explanations about almost anything you can think of that is related to Canada.
      This encyclopedia is available in both English and French! Be sure to use the
       "Search" function to find what you're looking for. Definitely worth a visit.
Columbia On-line Encyclopedia : Another winner from Bartleby.com! Here, they offer
an excellent encyclopedia that provides easy-to-understand information on tens of
thousands of subjects. Recommended.
Encyberpedia.com : an easy-to-use index of interesting topics. Good for
younger students.
Encyclopedia.com : the free, stripped-down version of the Electric Library's on-line
encyclopedia. The free version of Encyclopedia.com is more of an elaborate
dictionary than and encyclopedia, but it still offers good, concise articles and it is
quite good for use by younger students.
How Stuff Works : a great "almost encyclopedia" where you can learn how almost
anything works! Highly recommended.
WikiPedia : an excellent free on-line encyclopedia. What's cool about WikiPedia is that it
often covers subjects that other online encyclopedia's miss. And, because there's
almost no advertising on it, WikiPedia's search engine (located on the site's left
sidebar) lets you find info really, really fast! Highly recommended.
