Mental Health
Mental Health and Brain Disorders (WHO) : this sub-site of the World Health
Organization provides information on some of the major problems involving mental
health throughout the world. The site also has additional links to other mental
health resources.
Mental Health Resources at About.com : this is the perfect place to start any
homework research into mental health. Here, you'll find a good selection of mental
health links as well as dozens of other well-categorized sections related to mental
health. Recommended.
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) : this "For the Public" section of the NIMH
site offers very good general information regarding, anxiety and bipolar disorders,
autism, depression and other mental health issues. Well done.
Stress Management and Emotional Wellness Links : a large index of sites dealing
with all the major areas of stress and emotional wellness. Well worth a look as you
will almost certainly find a site that will help you with your homework.

Nutrition
Adolescent Nutrition : This very brief article gets right to the point and tells you exactly
what the risks are for improper nutrition. It also provides a concise explanation on
what the typical teenager's diet should contain.
Food and Nutrition Information Center (USA) : an excellent source for information
on dietary supplements, diet guidelines, and other information about nutrition.

Nutritional Resources from the American Dietetic Association : a great site where you

regarding nutrition.
"Nutrition News" from Yahoo : up-to-the-moment headline stories about nutrition and
health developments.

Poisoning
American Association of Poison Control Centers : find info about how to prevent
poisoning. This site also contains poisoning statistics (in the form of "TESS" annual
reports). Note that this site tends to be a bit slow to load. Also, your computer must
have Adobe Acrobat (available from the site) in order to view the TESS documents.
Bad Bug Book : this US Food and Drug Administration on-line book provides information
and links to bacteria, parasites, viruses, natural toxins and more that can
contaminate and poison food.
Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention : this simple page contains good, basic
information on the danger that lead poisoning poses to children. Advice on how to
prevent lead poisoning is also provided.
eMedicine : scroll to the "Toxicology" section on this page to find all kinds of great
internal links to poisonous plants, toxic substances and more.
Poisoning Prevention : solid, easy-to-understand advice from the Centers for Disease
Control (USA) on how to prevent accidental poisoning in one's own home. This page
also provides good links to other sites that have information on poison prevention.

on how to survive hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, earthquakes, and
other disasters.
Internet Injury Prevention Resources : this is a great place to start your injury
prevention or safety research. Here, you will find good links to suicide prevention,
burn prevention, drowning prevention, bicycle safety, sports safety, and a host of
other prevention-based resources. Recommended.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Research Page : this site -- sponsored by no less
than the US Federal Highway Administration (FHA) -- provides very good information
on bicycle accidents and how to prevent them.
PrevLine: Prevention Alert : get very good information on recent efforts by anti-drug
forces to curb illegal drug use in America. Note that these documents are written at
a fairly high level of education, so younger students will need parental help to
understand them.

other kinds of stuff. Give this one a try!
Sex Files : a terrifically educational site that offers up-front information regarding flirting,
dating, sexual intercourse, sexual diseases, homosexuality, the human sex drive,
and more. Note that this site, while not sexually explicit in any way, has some frank
language. Parental supervision is advised. Highly recommended.
Sexual Health from KidsHealth.org : get very good information regarding sexual health
for teens. This site is especially cool as it splits sexual questions into "Girls" and
"Guys" categories. Recommended.
Sexuality from the Alan Guttmacher Institute : here, you'll find excellent information
on sexual behavior, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, birth, and more.
Sexuality, Gender, and the Law: National and International : if you want to do
research on how the laws of different countries treat heterosexuality,
homosexuality, bisexuality, and other "sexual preferences," this impressive
collection of links will help you get started.
STD 101 and 201 (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) : this area of the Iwannaknow.org
teen information site provides excellent information on sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs). It not only provides sections for "basic" and "detailed" information
about STDs, but it also has sections explaining curable and incurable STDs. Very
well done! Recommended.
Teen Pregnancy from NOAH : here, you'll find an very good selection of links to
resources dealing with all aspects of teen pregnancy. Recommended.

DMOZ "Sexual Offenses: Statistics and Research : the DMOZ search engine results
on the statistics and research regarding numerous types of sexual crimes. Note that
many of these resources can be fairly involved. So, you may need an adult to help
you to understand some of them.
Men and Domestic Violence Index : this is a sexual crimes site with a twist: it offers
information on men who are victims of sexual abuse. Interesting. You'll also find
some pretty good information on child abuse here as well.
MINCAVA : a superb source for all kinds of information regarding rape, incest, child
abuse, and other sexual crimes. If you're doing a report on sex crimes, this is a very
good place to start your research. Recommended.
Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN) : a fine source for information on
rape, sexual abuse, and incest. Be sure to click their "Statistics" link for some
really sobering numbers on sexual crimes.
Sexual Assault from the Institute of Law and Justice : a very good source for all kinds of
information about the various types of sexual assault crimes including date rape.

Smoking and Tobacco
Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids : a great site that provides information on how states,
the US federal government, and governments around the world are trying to prevent
tobacco use and addition among youth. Very good.
Smoking from WebMD : a fine article that gives solid, easy-to-understand information
about the effects of smoking. This article also provides good information on many of
the things that a person can do to quit smoking.
Teens and Smokeless Tobacco from KidsHealth.org : a really cool site devoted to
providing information about the dangers of "chewing tobacco" and "snuff." Well
done. RecommendedHomework Tip : You should also try KidsHealth's other 
excellent sub-site on smoking, Smoking: Cutting Through the Hype.
Tobaccopedia : an awesome site that is FILLED with all kinds of tobacco and smoking
information -- including links to secret documents that the cigarette and tobacco
industries tried to keep hidden from the public! Note that this site has a LOT of
information on it. So, younger students may need a parent or an older sibling to
help them find what they need. Highly recommended.

Sports Medicine
Sports Medicine at About.com : a great place to start your research into sports
medicine. This About.com page contains well-chosen links that will take you to
articles and sites that provide excellent information on sports-related injuries
and cures.
Sports Medicine at emedicine.com : a terrific resource that gives detailed information
regarding the most common sports injuries. The info here can be detailed, so
younger students may need a little help with understanding it.
Sports and Nutrition : this site by the University of Illinois offers good,
easy-to-understand information regarding what it takes, nutritionally, to be a high
performance athlete.

Substance / Drug Abuse

Information on Common Drugs of Abuse : this National Institute on Drug Abuse
(NIDA) site is FILLED with detailed information about commonly abused drugs. If
you need in-depth info on illicit and abused drugs, you should give this site a visit.
Newsroom at Health.org : get current events information and headline news regarding
alcohol and substance abuse. A really good site! Recommended.
What Teens Should Know About Drugs and Alcohol : this KidsHealth sub-site is a
great resource for easy-to-understand information about illegal and illicit drug use.
Partnership for a Drug-Free America : an awesome site that provides the latest drug
abuse news stories, information about drugs and drug abuse, and sources for
combating illegal drug use. This is a really great site! Highly recommended.
Substance Dependence from the World Health Organization (WHO) : for an
international perspective on drug and substance abuse, this is a good place to start.
